Client - A leading private investment firm

The client is interested in outsourcing applications. There is very little documentation surrounding the current in-scope application. There is a need to mobilize a team to work with leads at the client. The processes to continue supporting and enhancing the application need to be established. Metrics need to be setup to measure the success of the mobilization and the team taking over the responsibilities.

Team Foundation Server has been identified and deployed as a tool to manage the development & support processes. Processes have been documented and enacted to ascertain that the team is performing with the right controls and effective communication mechanisms. The team is in calibration mode before moving on to a steady state.

Served as lead solution architect. Managed a team of 6 and client leads through the various phases of mobilization to a agreeable state.

Relevant Technologies: ASP.NET 4.0, SQL Server 2008 R2, IIS, TFS

Manager, Solution Developer
Avanade, Inc.
May 2011 - August 2011

Client - A prescription drug filling company

The client had inherited a Web Portal application as part of an acquisition. There was very little documentation surrounding the application. The current state of the application served one customer. The client was looking to scale the web portal to meet multiple customer requirements.

After an initial assessment & discovery phase, a system was architected so as to provide a centralized self service tool to manage the various drug program focused internet facing portals. A service was designed to run within the client's ESB (based on Mule) to make the configuration information available to each portal application. The portal application was re-architected to scale and serve multiple drug program from a single instance.

Served as lead architect. In addition to architecting the solution, was responsible for scoping the solution and delivering an estimate against the scope to the client.

Relevant Technologies: ASP.NET 3.5, SQL Server 2005, IIS

Held 4 positions (including 3 promotions) February 2003 - January 2011

Line Management of Resources (FTE and Contractor/Consultant)

  • Manage and mentor a team of 11 direct reports (at one time 16).
  • Identify career development and coaching plans.
  • Resource scheduling & allocation.

Comprehensive systems architecture focused on optimization of Time to market, Cost, Quality and Reuse

Represented as a member in the 3 member Enterprise Architecture Group which was tasked with setting the Strategic Vision and Architecture direction globally for Universal Music Group.

  • Provide the architectural vision for the enterprise.
  • Architecture framework that was technology neutral. A variety of technologies were used by the various groups in UMG such as J2EE, Microsoft .NET, RPG/AS400, SQL Server, Oracle, BizTalk on Windows, Linux and AS400 platforms.
  • Created an Architecture Repository using the Troux tooling, which included Infrastructure, systems/services, applications, artifacts (business as well as technical).
  • Created artifacts such as high level architecture layer diagrams.
  • Choice of tooling, technologies and procure/build decision for major systems/services implementation.

At the Label & Corporate Systems department level  (systems used enterprise wide / globally):

  • Conceptualized & designed a central rules based approval routing service (Workflow Services). The service could be configured with meta data using an administration tool. A set of web user controls which could be reused in multiple applications. A stand-alone emailing service (Windows Service) for sending out notifications and reminders.
  • Conceptualized and designed a central Authentication and Authorization system (UserIdentity). For internal clients Active Directory was used for Authentication for ASP.NET applications using Windows Integrated Authentication feature of IIS (Windows Authentication). For external clients a username/password scenario was implemented (Forms Authentication).  An administration tool (ASP.NET 2.0 application) was also conceptualized to manage the meta data.
  • Architected the infrastructure needs such as IIS, SQL Server, Sharepoint, Biztalk servers in a Virtualized environment (VMWare & Hyper-V), inclusive of capacity planning and performance optimization.
  • Estimated and planned the work effort for the technical development aspects of the project.
  • The systems were implemented using ASP.NET 3.5, WCF Web Services and SQL Server 2005 as database backend.
  • Provided the implementation team with Layer Diagrams, Physical Solution Structure, Conceptual Class Diagram, activity diagrams and sequence diagrams (UML). Reviewed Class diagrams, database schema diagrams and additional activity diagrams and sequence diagrams created by technical leads. Documented Interfaces and provided walkthroughs for external groups to enable them to consume the centralized services, using Troux repository and Sharepoint.
  • Performed code reviews against pre-determined coding best practices and naming conventions, to make sure that the code adhered to documented activity diagrams, sequence diagrams and technical specifications.
  • Coached and mentored  implementation teams from developing application silos to modern n-tiered SOA friendly applications & services,  using new technologies such as ASP.NET 3.5 (C#), WCF, Azure,  BizTalk, Entity Framework and Workflow Foundation and Team Foundation Server.

Management of System Development,  emerging technology opportunities, Service Delivery, Standards & Best Practices

  • Own technical production operations including infrastructure for over 140 core business applications.
  • Increased team productivity by encouraging use of MSDN resources and enabling virtualization on developer workstations (Required hands-on experience to demonstrate use of Windows Virtual PC for Windows 7, Virtual PC 2007 and/or VMware workstation).
  • Established metrics and processes in keeping the operating costs within budget towards reducing the headcount. Reuse the same headcount for ongoing development activities. Required process engineering experience and hands-on knowledge of TFS.
  • Reduced required headcount by 32% within 3 year time frame.
  • Transformed the development process to adopt a modified agile methodology based on MSF for Agile Software Development.
  • Transitioned and consolidated source control from Visual SourceSafe spread over multiple servers to a single Team Foundation Server.
  • Separated the development process from the support process and established metrics to monitor efficiency in both the processes using the TFS tooling.
  • Consolidated the diverse tooling used in SDLC from traditional MS Office based to TFS across Project Management,  Business Analysis, Development and Production Support disciplines.
